The most effective double chin treatments, Marylebone, London

The dreaded double chin is a common issue for many people and is often an unfortunate side effect of ageing, hormonal changes or weight gain. So, is there anything you can do about the pesky double-chin? Thanks to recent innovations in non-surgical treatments, a range of solutions now exist to help patients effectively target double chins without surgery or downtime.

What causes a double chin?

The body is always looking for new places to put fat cells; one area it particularly likes is the top of the neck, right underneath your jaw. The technical name for this is ‘submental fat’. Whilst a double chin can be related to carrying excess body fat, it’s possible to be a very normal, healthy weight and have a double chin. Everyone has different fat distributions, which are determined genetically and during our development in puberty.

The incidence and prominence of double chins increase with age as the skin loses its elasticity. Up to about the age of 30, the body is pretty good at replenishing the levels of collagen and elastin in the skin. However, after 30, they start to deplete much faster. Without the structural support of collagen and the elastin to pull things back to where they were before, gravity has the edge and starts to pull the skin south.

For most people, double chins are caused by a mixture of these two issues, with fat being the dominant problem. However, it is possible to develop a double chin without any fat deposits, though this is only really seen in later age.

How can I reduce the fat under my chin?

There are several treatments that can be used to treat double chins, depending on what your chin, neck and jaw look like. Some of these will actively reduce the amount of fat under the chin, others will disguise it by improving the look of your jawline or tightening the skin on your neck.

CoolSculpting

Using a special hand-held applicator attached to a CoolSculpting machine, we carefully target and freeze away the unwanted fat cells that create a double chin, smoothing out and contouring the chin and jawline as part of the treatment process. It uses controlled freezing to deep freeze fat cells, causing them to die and be naturally expelled via your lymphatic system over twelve weeks. The results are permanent, as your body cannot restore the fat cells after they’ve been destroyed unless you put on an excessive amount of weight in a short amount of time.

Profound RF

Profound RF is an advanced technology used to treat sagging skin, jowls, wrinkles and excess fat on the face, neck and body. It combines microneedling and radiofrequency technologies for advanced skin tightening and rejuvenating effect. The only proven technology capable of generating all three components of healthy skin – collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid – Profound RF heats the deeper skin tissues to stimulate skin repair optimally. Under the chin, Profound RF can be used to reduce the stubborn fat pad and lift and define the jawline.

Fat dissolving injections

Belkyra is a highly effective fat-busting solution which works behind the scenes to break down stubborn fat bulges and sculpt a smoother-looking jawline. In treatment, we will start by marking the area before injecting the deoxycholic acid-based solution directly into the fatty pocket. This emulsifies the fat cells, forcing them to dissolve gradually and disappear over the following weeks. Two to three sessions are usually required for the best outcome, approximately six weeks apart.

Facial fillers

Fillers work well in conjunction with both fat-busting solutions. As we age, there is some bone resorption that can cause us to lose the angles in our jawline. With less bone to hang on to, the tissues that were being held in place begin to descend forwards; the chin shrinks, and the jawline is less angular. We can replace volume and definition by carefully injecting filler close to the bone, creating a more youthful jawline.
