When it comes to stimulating collagen and improving the overall skin texture of the face and neck, there isn’t much that compares to Profhilo in my eyes. It’s a relatively new, non-invasive treatment in the world of aesthetics, but since its release in 2015, it’s managed to cause quite a stir with patients and practitioners alike – promising to deliver a smoother, more supple and radiant complexion.
When women come to see me for the first time, many are transitioning through changes in their lives. They may be entering their menopausal years, going through a stressful life event that has started to take a toll on their skin, or they may have just begun to notice the first signs of ageing. Whatever the issue is, when it comes to skin, there aren’t many patients to whom I won’t recommend Profhilo, either on its own or in combination with other treatments such as fillers or radiofrequency.
What is Profhilo?
Profhilo is an injectable treatment used to boost hydration and improve the skin quality on the face, neck, decolletage and body. It is formulated with one of the highest concentrations of Hyaluronic Acid on the market, to naturally boost collagen within the body, hydrate the skin, and also remodel the ageing and sagging tissue.
Profhilo is commonly mistaken as a type of dermal filler, but whilst the two treatments are similar in the sense that both involve injecting hyaluronic acid into the skin, Profhilo doesn’t give the volume and definition that fillers provide, and it doesn’t change the structure of the face. It is simply about stimulating and rehydrating the skin, boosting radiance and improving elasticity.
How does it work?
Profhilo is a honey-like substance that is injected into five key sites of the area being treated. From these injection sites, it will spread, finding its way underneath the skin’s surface to treat the area as a whole. Once in place, Profhilo boosts skin hydration by enabling the skin to hold more moisture. It also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which is what, in time, will make the skin smoother, plumper and bouncier.
A complete reboot of the skin
The surface of our skin tends to become rougher, drier and more crepey over the years. Dehydration occurs when the skin barrier isn’t doing its job of holding moisture in the skin as well as it used to – a battle that many women face as they approach and go through menopause. Once we start to lose hydration, the skin begins to look more tired and dull, and wrinkles show up more quickly.
Another factor is the loss of collagen and elastin, the crucial, supportive proteins that give skin its structure and bounce and keep it firm. From the age of 25, our collagen supply begins to gradually decrease, year by year, until the menopause, at which point it plummets to almost nothing. When this occurs, the skin loses its elasticity which leads to increased wrinkles and sagging.
When we treat skin that’s going through these changes with a bio-stimulator such as Profhilo, we’re not only improving hydration in the skin, but we’re stimulating the skin’s fibroblast cells to kickstart significant renewal within the skin for a complete skin reboot.
